Weiss Tech House Alumni Company Kicks Off Launch on University of Pennsylvania Campus
Philadelphia - November 6, 2007 - Fone2Fone, Inc., a company that specializes in the development of mobile applications, has launched its first mobile social networking application, Styky. Unlike other mobile applications on the market today, Styky integrates social networking, automatic contact updating and backup, and mobile couponing in a single application.
"Styky is the next generation of your mobile phonebook – a fusion of online social networking and phonebook backup, as well as more traditional "Sunday Paper" coupons. Users can wirelessly share digital content, automatically update and backup contact information and access money-saving coupons. It’s the ideal tool for anyone who’s ever lost their phone, changed carriers, lost touch with friends or loves to save money," said Kunal Gupta, CEO of Fone2Fone and a University of Pennsylvania alumnus (W'04, ENG'04).
Unlike other social networking applications that were developed for the web and later became available on the mobile phone, Styky was specifically designed for use on mobile phones and offers maximum functionality with an attractive and intuitive mobile user interface. To accommodate the different shapes and sizes of mobile phones, Styky employs a unique user interface for each device. Most importantly, the application has been created around the interests of college students and young professionals, a group that has demonstrated a phenomenal appetite for social networking.
"We look forward to providing these users with all the fun and functionality that Styky offers — all for free and in a single application," Gupta added.
Styky is being launched this fall on college campuses throughout the U.S, starting with the University of Pennsylvania. Targeting Penn as Styky's first launch site is especially significant for Gupta and Fone2Fone's CTO Rishi Bhat (BSE'06, MSE '06), who are not only Penn alumni but also utilized several University resources to assist them in establishing Fone2Fone in 2004. To help them bring their product to market, Gupta and Bhat worked closely with the University's Weiss Tech House, a student-run hub of technological innovation that encourages and supports students in the creation, development and commercialization of innovative technologies.
"The Weiss Tech House was extremely instrumental in helping us take our first steps, which is the hardest period faced by entrepreneurs. The dedicated and knowledgeable staff helped as acquire the critical resources and support we needed, in addition to providing us with our first dollars of funding," said Bhat.
