The Weiss Tech House offers the following programs and resources to aid students in their exploration, creation and development of innovative technologies.
Programs:
- Innovation Fund: Apply for funding from our in-house, mini-venture capital Innovation Fund grants of up to $5,000, as well as lab space and legal, business, and technical mentoring.
- PennVention Competition: Participate in our annual student invention competition and you’ll receive intensive industry consultation and mentoring services and have a chance to compete for more than $60,000 in cash and in-kind prizes at our final invention fair in April.
- Distinguished Speaker Series: Attend an educational workshop, seminar or distinguished speaker series event. Past speakers include Josh Kopelman, founder of Half.com; John Osher, inventor of the Crest SpinBrush; and Marilyn Montross, Director of Vendor Relations for QVC
- Business Mentoring Program: Take advantage of our in-house, graduate legal and business mentors.
- Innovation Week: Participate in a week’s worth of activities to excite students from across the University about the possibilities of technological innovation. In 2006, our first annual Innovation Week included a panel discussion with successful entrepreneurs and a campus-wide treasure hunt where students flex their intellectual muscles to gather clues pertaining to Penn’s history of Innovation.
- Leadership Opportunities: Join one of our six student committees: Community Relations, Innovation Fund, PennVention, Mentoring, Marketing, or Information Technology, and gain valuable leadership experience.
Resources:
- Lab Space, Computer Lab, Tools: Access practical necessities like group meeting space, a computer lab, printing service, six project bays in which to build a prototype, a sewing machine, five tool boxes and a library of technical books and videos for students.
- Network: Tap into our network of alumni and industry experts by registering to receive weekly Weiss Tech House news updates and/or monthly newsletter, MOMENTUM, by sending an email to info@tech-house.upenn.edu with “newsletter” in the subject line.
- Livesphere Team Finder: Find students, faculty and staff to collaborate network, form teams and collaborate on projects with through Livesphere is a student-developed Internet service.
