The Weiss Tech House is looking for a lead web developer to work on the main websites the WTH hosts. This position is a perfect opportunity for people who want to work on projects that go live immediately. If you are interested in social networking, PennLaunch http://www.pennlaunch.com would be an exciting opportunity for you; if you are more interested in Python/Django, then the PennVention site http://www.pennvention.com would be a great match; or if you like to work on something big, then the main website is awaiting you http://www.tech-house.upenn.edu.

Responsibilities:

• Maintain all the websites that have been developed at the Weiss Tech House
• Add new and/or edit existing features of the current websites
• Work on new projects if necessary

Minimum skills:

• Good knowledge of PHP and HTML
• Being able to upload files to a server as well as edit them

Applicants with any of the following skills will be preferred:

• Familiarity with CakePHP and/or Django
• Being able to use version control systems like Subversion or Git
• Familiarity with databases, in particular MySQL
• Experience with Javascript, jQuery and/or Ajax

Pay rate: ($9.40 – $12.80) depending on the skills, Work study preferred but not mandatory. If you are an international student, you must have the correct working papers and documents in place.

Within the ‘main application’ form there are detailed instructions on how to complete the full application process. If you have any further questions please contact the Innovation Fund Chair at apply.innovationfund@gmail.com

If your project is selected, an Innovation Fund Committee member will become your project manager, and will act as your liaison to the rest of the Committee. If he feels that you are ready to present your idea in front of the committee, he will prepare you for a formal 10-minute pitch followed by a 10-minute Questions & Answers session. Accepted teams will receive a $1,000 grant and will have access to the Tech House’s technical, legal, and business mentoring resources. Teams that are not accepted to the Innovation Fund will have the opportunity to pitch again during the following semester.

Certain accepted teams which need additional resources can apply for an additional $4,000 in funding. The Innovation Fund will only award one grant of additional funding per semester. Interested teams should contact their project managers for more information.

RJMetrics Business Software Award: $6,000 of business intelligence software to help the winning team manage their venture more efficiently and persuade venture capital investors to invest in their business. This is awarded to the most commercially promising invention that involves a database-driven product.

Design Circle Inc, Design for Manufacture Award: $3,000: This award is given out base on how well the product lends itself to overseas manufacturing, requires assembly labor, price sensitivity and forecasts high manufacturing volumes. Additional criteria includes a clearly defined market, providing a novel solution to an existing need, creating demand for a new one and a plan for commercialization.

Bresslergroup Best Product Concept Award: $2500 in professional services used at the winner’s discretion towards research, concept development or CAD modeling in the development of their product for production.

The APAC Chemical Corporation Award: $1000: This award recognizes those individuals who rise above and beyond to make a meaningful impact on the environment.

Tapper Innovation Connect Award: The award includes a round trip plane ticket to London, England, $1000 cash for expenses, and a two-night stay in a business class hotel. A privative meeting is also part of the trip to discuss winner’s idea and network with the Chief Technical Officer and SVP of Open Innovation of Unilever.

Lowenstein Sandler PC Legal Mentor Award: Five (5) hours of free legal services and advice from Lowenstein Sandler PC regarding intellectual property, contract review and/or choice of entity/corporate formation issues.

Social Innovation Prize: $500 cash awarded to the best social innovation that follows the following criteria: an entrepreneur with an innovative idea, idea is a financially sustainable venture, product, or business idea. The product or venture must impact people in some way, i.e. addresses a social or environmental problem.

U + CAPITAL

U + Capital (U+C) allows students to fund their college education by taking out loans with equity-like repayment schedules. In these vehicles, called Personal Equity Issuances (PEIs), U+C funds a student in exchange for a percentage of the student’s income for a fixed time after graduation. U+C will invest in PEIs through PEI Funds which will be capitalized by socially conscious investors.

Pocket Grill

The Pocket Grill is targeted at food enthusiasts on the go – campers, tailgaters etc. It is a full size camping grill that can fold into the size of a smartphone for storage and transport!

 
UTurn

Page turning is a major inconvenience for all musicians. UTurn is a page turner that imitates a human assistant. It allows musicians to use their existing printed-page music scores without pre-loading them page-by-page, and supports forward and backwards turning.

eCheck

eCheck is the first electronic point-of-sale device designed around consumer interactions. The device synchronizes with the restaurants billing system and allows a party to simply, Pick what they ordered, Pay with their card and the Pass the device to the next person until all the items are accounted for.

SmartSense

SmartSense’s mission is to bring to market highly differentiated sensor solutions based on Aluminum Nitride Contour-Mode MEMS technology. Their proprietary technology provides solutions for gas detection in homeland security applications as well as alternative, fast and inexpensive solutions for proteomics analysis.

CampusYap

CampusYap aims to improve communication within groups/organizations/clubs/friend circles across college campuses. This is done by providing users with the ability to manage all their extra-curricular activities on one portal and by allowing them to choose the way they receive communications.

Lumin Biosensors

The Lumin Biosensor team is leveraging recent advances in synthetic biology to create a new class of affordable and reliable water quality tests which can be operated by minimally trained users in the field.
